How can I increase my underwater longevity?

I’m going to be going to a school that involves a lot of underwater distance swimming. I’ve heard that 25 meters is about average, I could probably do about 20 right now. What are some techniques for increasing my breath capabilities, and what is the best swim form to not waste energy? Any info is appreciated, thanks!
Swim a 100, but on the third length, hold your breath, or try to do it underwater. You might want to start out with fins or zoomers first until you can do it by yourself. My coach calls them lungbusters

Any cardiovascular exercise. You should always be out of breath when finishing, even though it will take you longer to get out of breath the more you do the exercises.
